Smith & Dunn Restoration

Don't throw that away! Or worse, leave it to languish in a lonely attic. We repair and refurbish heirloom time pieces, vintage electronics, and more. Let Smith & Dunn restore cherished devices to working order.

Our Services

Our shop features a wide array of capabilities from machining and woodwork to electronics testing and fabrication.

What we do:

  1. Repair antique pocket and wrist watches
  2. Refurbish vintage electronics (computers, game consoles, audio gear)
  3. Fabrication of small parts and electronic systems
  4. Pretty much anything with small mechanical and electronic components

What we don't do:

  1. Rebuild engines or vehicles
  2. Anything too large to fit the door of our shop
  3. Cuckoo clocks (don't even ask)
  4. Anything we lack the tools or expertise to do

If you have a job for us, send us an email, tell us your story, and we will do what we can to help. We give free estimates for repairs. You are responsible for getting the item to us and picking it up.

Our Story

We are Smith and Dunn; partners and curators of fine junk. An antiquarian horologist and an electrical engineer joined forces to save amazing artifacts from finding their way to the dump. Our things carry memories. They reflect back to us our identity and values. When we discard them, we discard a small piece of ourselves. Modern things are built to be discarded as if we are not meant to have any relationship with these objects beyond consumption. It's true they don't make things like they used to.

Once upon a time, but not so long ago, things were made to be repaired, maintained, loved, depended on, and passed on to future generations. We like that idea and we don't want to see amazing machines that were built to be loved, discarded in the cycle of consumption and waste for the sake of modern convenience. We believe things are made to be used, to work, and bring us joy. That's why we started Smith & Dunn Restoration out of our garage. We want to inspire people to think about objects as posessions to be owned instead of transient consumables by giving them a new life.

Our shop is based in Frankfort, Kentucky.
